Chapter 28

Smoke billowed into the air, stretching far into the sky before crashing against the ceiling. The cool breeze did little to keep the smoke from flowing over the entire dungeon, and soon we were coughing and wrapping cloth around our mouths.

“We need to finish this floor!” I do my best to yell at my companions but coughing in between words makes it hard.

“The boss should be around here!” Eski yells back.

“Nim and his party already evacuated. Why haven’t we?” Zestra asks.

Shaking my head, I look around and watch as the fires slowly approach us. Cut off from the cabin, we are left with one choice. Kill the boss and hope a portal appears, or race down to the third floor to finish this dungeon.

“The cabin is gone!” I answer.

“Eski, this is all your fault!” Sable spins on the dragonkin, glaring as she does.

“I know! Stop reminding me!”

Sighing, I push the dragonkin forward. “Let’s hurry. We need to stay ahead of the fire.”

Grumbling, she starts moving at a quicker pace. Eski is the only one that is wholly unaffected by the dungeon right now. With her dragon blood, she’s basking in the warmth while the rest of us go through our water supply steadily.

Throwing our last bottled water to the side after emptying it, I grit my teeth and push on. The North side of the dungeon is coming to an end, and some beast is howling over the roar of the fire.

“That must be the boss!” Once everyone nods, I start pushing past them, to speed up the party.

My legs are growing weak as we keep moving, and I know the others are starting to feel the strain of moving through the smoke. We are going to be out for a few days after this. I just hope we can survive long enough to get home.

Breaking through the last of the tree line, we come face to face with our boss. The monster is a simple wolf, well, I shouldn’t say simple. The monster is twenty feet long, and over ten high. Its fangs are long enough to bite clean through me, but it looks to be in pain.

The boss rolls on the ground before shoving its nose into the dirt, trying to block the smell of its forest burning to the ground. After sharing a look with us, he growls, and tries coming to attention.

“You did this!” he roars.

Eski steps forward and raises her shield. “Would it help if we said sorry?”

Staggering to his feet, the boss pants as he slowly approaches us. “It would not. You have destroyed my forest and killed my minions. The only joy I will know is killing you before I burn to death.”

Gulping, I watch him lower into a crouch. Before he can jump, a bolt tears through the air and impacts the wolfs left eye. The explosion destroys the organ and shatters the socket as the boss’s head whips back.

Reloading, Zestra does her best to control her breathing as she takes aim once again.
